Two years ago we were looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful to get away for the night during May half term. I stumbled upon Hilly Cow Wigwams near Edinburgh and booked a wigwam for the five of us plus another for my brother and his girlfriend. Scotland's half term date's vary slightly to those in Northumberland so we were lucky to have the site to ourselves and we only paid £50 per wigwam per night. Bargain!
Isn't the setting beautiful! You really feel like you are away from everything. The wigwams are set on a working farm so when you arrive you are instructed to ring the lovely owners and they come down to show you around and settle you into your wigwam.
The wigwam's are heated and the sofa's inside fold down in the evening to create beds. You need to take your own bedding however you will find your own kettle, cutlery, crockery and BBQ.
What a BBQ it is! We started our afternoon with a walk around the farm and a big family BBQ. There is a farm dog (Misty) and cat who do like to keep you company. I absolutely adore this photograph of Misty with my children below. She followed us all everywhere. The owner told us if she caused us any trouble we could phone her and she would come and get her but to be honest it made our holiday.
The facilities at Hilly Cow are fantastic. There is a play barn containing a pool table, darts and air hockey and a lovely play park to the rear of the wigwams.
In the evening we were asked if we would like a farm tour - I took our children and I was amazed how close we could get to the animals and what we could see, it was a completely different experience to visiting a petting farm - much more real and hands on.
There is a fully equipped communal kitchen should you wish to cook and it contains lots of tourist information and even takeaway menu's from places that will deliver to the wigwams. Fantastic!
Our wigwam's weren't en-suite (although you can request this) but we were more than happy using the communal loo's behind the wigwams. They are situated in the barn next to the kitchen and along with the showers are absolutely immaculate.
We finished our day toasting some marshmallows over the fire pit and enjoying a few drinks watching the sun go down. OMG just look at those grass stains!!
The next day we woke up to the most glorious view and enjoyed breakfast outside of our wigwam before packing up and heading home. £50 was a bargain for our night away - we felt refreshed and relaxed after our stay and it was just lovely enjoying some fresh country air.

I've always really wanted to go to a wigwam because I can't go camping due to a phobia of sleeping close to grass (I don't even like walking on grass - urgh!).
