I have a confession to make - up until a few years ago I would never ever consider eating a burger. Memories of eating frozen supermarket burgers as a child and dried up burgers on a BBQ had really put me off. It is fair to say however that there has been somewhat of a burger revolution in the last few years. Gone are the days of dry, poor quality burgers which have been replaced with burgers using quality ingredients and cooked so they are perfectly juicy in restaurants up and down the country. Burgers are most definitely back on the menu.
We are fans of making our own burgers at home and it's something that the kids like to get involved with. We are pretty boring in our creations though with our most exotic burger to date featuring an onion ring, cheese and BBQ sauce. When Turnbull's of Alnwick sent us a burger making kit to celebrate their very own #burgerweek (14th - 23rd May) I was very excited to hopefully re-create the type of burger I regularly enjoy in restaurants.
Harry Hotspur Burger
We were sent a kit to make four Harry Hotspur burgers (one burger per person is more than enough). This burger has been named after Sir Henry Percy AKA Harry Hotspur - Alnwick's illustrious warrior. Kits cost around £15 each and contain fresh, locally sourced ingredients plus a recipe booklet featuring five delicious burger recipes.
Both myself and hubby work a 12 hour shift on a Sunday and unfortunately this means we are usually very lazy in the kitchen on a Sunday night - our mid-week organic dinners are replaced with microwave meals and 'freezer surprise' (not something I'm exactly proud of). You usually won't find me instagramming my dinner on a Sunday night that's for sure. However this Sunday we planned to make a Harry Hotspur and we were both pleasantly surprised that it was on our plate within 15 minutes of arriving home. Impressive!
Our burgers were made up of the finest local ingredients including:-
- 4oz Turnbull's Beef and Caramalised Onion burger
- 1 Slice Turnbull's Crispy Home Cured Bacon
- Lee Moor Farm Bakery Cheese and Onion Bun
- Turnbull's Garlic Mayo
- Barbars 1880 Vintage mature cheddar (grated)
- Crispy Fried Shallots
- Sliced Vine Tomato
- Turnbull's Coleslaw
All of the ingredients for your burgers are provided together in your kit. The only extra we needed was a little olive oil to fry the bacon.
OMG just looking at this picture makes my mouth water. Our burger was perfect. I would never have experimented and put a burger together myself using these ingredients but they were a match made in heaven. I cannot believe we have managed to make a burger at home that is on par to my all time favourites from Newcastle's Fat Hippo.
#Burgerweek at Turnbull's continues until 23rd May. Help support a local business and pop down to their shop on Market Street in Alnwick where you can pick up your own burger kit. If a whole kit isn't for you you will also a wide selections of burgers using various meats on offer.
