We arrived at 5pm on a Monday evening and the heavens decided to open. Cue three disappointed children who we wouldn't let play in the park (mean mummy!). It did look good though and we will be back - there were a few outdoor chairs for grown ups to sit on but you aren't allowed to eat/drink out there.
It wasn't too busy when we arrived - in fact we were the only ones in the dining area. The bar was fairly busy with people catching up with a pint after work. I don't know what the pub looked like before but we were very impressed with the decor now - lots of hints to the seaside location including driftwood, yachts and shells.
We took a look at the menu and I was very impressed with some of the various deals on offer including curry and a bottle of Cobra for £6.95 on a Thursday (this was recommended by somebody on my facebook page who also mentioned the homemade chips were to die for), steak and all the trimmings for £7.99 on a Thursday or my favourite - two portions of fish n chips, bread and butter and two cups of tea for £10 on a Friday! Bargain!
Unfortunately there were no specific food deals to be had on a Monday however the menu was still very reasonably priced with main courses being priced around £7-£8. We made our decisions and ordered at the bar.
I ordered 'butchers sausage' for £6.95 which was served with mash, peas and lots of gravy. It was nice however I would have preferred my sausages to be a little crispier and a jug of homemade gravy would take the dish to the next level. These are only minor grumbles though and I think they are mainly because I was so jealous of hubby's dish......
Steve ordered the BBQ and bacon burger which was served with crispy fries, salad and slaw. Everything was divine - I couldn't resist a huge bite and next time I will definitely be ordering my own!
Jack ordered a mini version of my sausage but opted for fries rather than mash and he finished the lot and Harry and Heidi ordered the cheese and tomato pizza with fries and beans. We did find it odd that there were big chunks of onion hidden inside the pizza - something I've never encountered before and it did make my daughter's face twist a little. She managed to finish her meal though with a little bribery in the form of ice cream.
Children's ice cream is included in the cost of the meal which at £4.95 for a main meal and ice cream is competitively priced.
Again, Steve chose the winning dessert - chocolate orange cookie crisp which priced at £2 was an absolute bargain. Served with a dollop of chocolate ice cream it was the perfect way to end his meal.
Our verdict on The Sandpiper is it a nice place to spend a sunny evening after school or over the weekend. I would recommend trying a burger if you are hungry and I will definitely return to try their fish and chip deal on a Friday.
The Sandpiper also has an extensive and quality hot drink menu and you receive a free slice of cake when you buy a tea or coffee before 4pm Monday-Friday which makes it a lovely spot to meet up with friends in the afternoon.
We are delighted to have been given a £50 voucher for one lucky reader to spend at The Sandpiper pub in Cullercoats. Simply enter using the rafflecopter widget below. Good luck!
