The Bank is back - a stylish restaurant and bar in Low Fell

Low Fell is somewhere in the North East I have driven through a few times but have never actually visited so when I heard the story behind The Bank Bar and Restaurant and was invited to their relaunch I couldn't wait to hear more.

As it's name suggests, The Bank restaurant and bar was in fact a Lloyds bank in it's former life and the imposing building dates back to the 1840's. The interior is stripped back, modern and warm with cozy corners, wood burning stoves and soft lighting. I love the subtle hints to the building's past with the oversized glossy back front door and a traditional bowler hat theme running throughout.

Kevin Brown who owns the grade II listed building has joined forces with original head chef Lee Walker and general manager Adam Lewis to give the building a new lease of life after the restaurant was sadly closed by it's previous owners in 2014. They have a vision to provide seasonal and local food to their customers old and new whilst staying true to their roots and remaining affordable. I was extremely impressed with everything The Bank had to offer and I will be back soon to sample their Sunday lunch with the family which I think is a steal at three courses for £15 (I have my eye on Garlic and Rosemary Braised shoulder of lamb).

Without further ado, here are some snaps from our evening which will hopefully give you a flavour of what The Bank has to offer:

The bar downstairs serves a selection of bar bites (minted lamb burger and fish finger sandwich both stand out) local craft ales, beers from around the world, cocktails and wines.

The wine list has been expertly curated by wine merchants Corney & Barrow. Priced between £3.90 for a glass of house red and £135 for a bottle of vintage Dom Perignon, there is something for all budgets and tastes.

The upstairs restaurant is elegant, warm and inviting and I think it is the perfect space to hold a small private party or wedding. Thanks to Gareth Beddard, a local musician from Northumberland who provided the perfect soundtrack to our evening.

Starters include plump King Prawns and charred BBQ chicken.

I can highly recommend the Monkfish wrapped in parma ham on a tomato and chorizo cassoulet - packed full of flavour and spice (sample pictured).

The Bank pride themselves on their steak which is locally sourced and aged for at least 21 days. 

The fillet steak is superb and also recommended - definitely up there with the best.

Desserts aren't forgotten and the menu features so many of my favourites including poached pear and amaretto ice cream and sticky toffee pudding.

At the end of the evening we spent some time chatting with the staff which I think is the best way to get a feel for somewhere. They were all enthusiastic, knowledgable, passionate and welcoming and the owner Kevin really was a real gentleman. 

Whether you are looking for a quick sandwich or drinks in the bar, a family Sunday lunch in the restaurant or an extra special meal for two, The Bank in Low Fell certainly fits the bill.
