There seems to have been a real turn in the weather lately and I am not really looking forward to the school run in the next few months. Our walk home from school takes around 25 minutes so it's a good 50 minute walk for me. Lovely in the summer but not so great when it's pouring down with rain, blowing a gale and freezing cold.
As soon as we step through our front door the kids will always start moaning that a) they are freezing cold and b) they are starving. When did after school snacks become a thing by the way? I swear I had to wait until 5pm before I was fed.
I always like to try and be a well-prepared mum when I can and my three are going through a phase where they adore Harry Potter at the moment so I decided to see if I could make our own butterbeer to come home to after school.
Yazoo have recently launched a range of milk drinks with no-added sugar or sweeteners in three different flavours - toffee, strawberry and banana. We were sent a few different varieties to test out and I decided to try making our own butterbeer with the toffee flavoured milk drink.
All you need to do is pour enough of the Yazoo toffee flavoured milk into your slow cooker, set it away on high and leave it. How easy is that! I set mine away at 2:30pm and it was the perfect temperature when we returned at 3:45pm.
Butterbeer can be served cold in bottles or hot in "foaming tankard and tasting a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch". Harry Potter describes it as being "the most delicious thing he’d ever tasted and seemed to heat every bit of him from the inside." Of course we had to go for the hot version. I had these tankards left over from our Christmas movie night party last year and ordered some cheap Harry Potter stickers from Amazon as an extra special touch.
When you're ready to drink, simply ladle into tankards and serve immediatly. We used the milk frother on our coffee machine to froth the top and make it more authentic.
My super-easy slow cooker butterbeer went down a treat with the kids and I liked the fact that their drink contained no added sugar (there is some naturally occurring sugar), no added sweeteners, colours or flavours and it's also suitable for vegetarians.
Heidi insisted on getting into character in this next shot........
Yazoo flavoured milk with no-added sugar is available in supermarkets now. Let me know if you're going to try this out for yourself.
