I don't know what your kids are like but my three are obsessed with 3D printers. Harry (aged 10) is especially into gadgets and technology and is always telling us about the latest developments he reads in First News. He asked for his very own 3D printer for Christmas but at almost £400 there's no chance of that any time soon. So when Fenwick invited us down to road test Katjes Magic Printer which is the world's first 3D gummy candy printer, I said yes straight away as I knew this would be one experience the kids would not want to miss.
Katjes Magic Candy Factory | Quick Facts
- You'll find Katjes Magic Candy Factory in the entrance of Fenwick Food Hall (near the beauty counters) until 23rd April 2017
- Opening hours are Mon - Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 9am - 7pm and Sun 10:30am - 5pm.
- Gummy Selfies cost £10
- The experience lasts around 10-15 minutes and no booking is required
- The magic candy is available in 8 flavours with 3 finishes
- The candy's patented recipe is vegan, all natural, gluten free, dairy free, nut free, halal and kosher friendly
The first thing you notice is the attention to detail. The stand looks beautiful and passers-by can't help but stop and take a peek. There are tasty samples being dished out, friendly and helpful staff on hand to assist and lots of pre-made gummy treats to admire. If you visit, I challenge you to see how many Geordie celebs you can spot.
Heidi was up first and decided to create a gummy version of herself. There is a special selfie chair where a member of staff will help you and take a photo. They've thought of everything and even have a selfie light for the best possible lighting. I had selfie lighting envy (who knew this was a thing) and as soon as I arrived home, ordered my very own selfie light from Amazon.
Then it's onto the flavours. You can choose from 8 different varieties and I love that kids can use the iPad themselves to pick their flavour. Choices include:
- Tasty Tropical
- Beautiful Blackcurrant
- Elegant Elderberry
- Gorgeous Green Apple
- Sublime Strawberry
- Luscious Lemon
- Marvelous Mango
- Ripe Raspberry
You can then select one of three toppings:
- Glitter
- Sour
- Fizzy
What I love about this experience is that the candy is suitable for most allergies and lifestyles so the experience is inclusive. You can find out full nutritional information here, but as a quick glance, the candy is:
- Vegan
- All Natural
- Dairy Free
- Gluten Free
- Nut Free
- Halal Friendly
- Kosher Friendly
You then watch the 3D printer create your selfie in candy. It's mesmerising to watch and see your face being brought to life in candy form. It only takes 5 minutes from start to finish which is pretty impressive! There is a small camera which films your creation being made and you are emailed a 15 second time lapse copy of the video at no additional cost too. Although at time of writing, we have not received our videos yet but I'll share them on my YouTube channel when we do.
Finally, Heidi's selfie was sprayed with edible glitter at her request before being packed into a lovely gift box and gift bag. This service is £10 which I think is pretty good value for money as an 'experience'. If the kids get any Easter money, they'll have fun spending it here.
We were impressed with Heidi's selfie and think it has a good likeness to her.
Harry wanted to try something a bit different. There are a few 3D shapes you can choose from ranging from an Octopus to a Dinosaur. Harry opted for a Gecko. The price to create the animals is also £10 and although Harry was super chuffed and loved creating his own Gecko, I think as an 'experience' a selfie provides better value for money.
Then onto Jack.......who also created his own sweet selfie.
Katjes Magic Candy Factory is not just about the end product - it's definitely a full experience. From the lovely staff, to the kids being able to use the iPads to select flavours and the thoughtful packaging. For £10, I think this is pretty good and our three all sang the praises of their sweet selfies and can't wait to tell their friends and teachers all about it at school tomorrow.
I'm pleased to report that the candy tasted good too! The kids took great joy in carefully peeling their body parts off and eating them! They all finished their full face straight away.
Insider tip: We would recommend you wear your hair down and pushed forward to get the more candy for your money.

I'm not sure I would recommend for younger children, but for those aged 5+, creating your own magic sweet selfie is a unique experience that they'll really enjoy. I think teens will also love it and it's worth remembering that you're never too old for a selfie. I can just imagine a multi-generation set of selfies taking pride of place on a few family fireplaces around the North East this Easter. They are certainly a talking point.
If you'd like to try this service out for yourself, remember to visit Fenwick Food Hall before 23rd April.
It's such a fun idea and as you say £10 seems a lot but not really when you think it's an experience that will stay with them! i'm sure they'll be very popular over the Easter holiday with the good folk of Newcastle
