We are SUPER late to the party on this one but after testing our most of the restaurants at intu Eldon Square now, we are happy to declare George's Great British Kitchen our absolute favourite spot for family dining in the centre. The restaurant is fun, serves delicious food and families are made to feel very welcome. Here's why we've declared George's Great British Kitchen to be the best.........
Family fun at George's Great British Kitchen
Dining out at George's Great British Kitchen in a real experience. First of all, if you're lucky you'll be able to grab one of the highly coveted beach hut booths. These are perfect for families and will comfortably seat 6. The booths come equipped with a variety of props for lots of family fun including selfie sticks, bowler hats, soft toys, selfie props and kids entertainment packs. More than enough to keep both the kids and grown ups happy as we waited for our food.
Drinks at George's Great British Kitchen Newcastle
The drinks menu is pretty cool and we were all very happy with our selection. Steve ordered a glass of homemade lemonade which he declared to be just as good as Fentimans, Harry went with his favourite (bottle of coca-cola) and Heidi and I decided to treat ourselves to a special FAB ice lolly cocktail and mocktail. They are part of the 2 for £8 deal this summer and very refreshing. If you fancy a trip down memory lane, I'd recommend. They even come with sprinkles!
Jack ordered the complimentary juice that is served with the children's menu - it's free from artificial colours or flavours and is made from natural ingredients. I also love that it was served with it's own lid - one less thing for us parents to worry about. All of our drinks were lovely and we couldn't fault them at all.
Children's Menu at George's Great British Kitchen Newcastle
The children's menu is aimed at children aged 8 and under. Although Harry (aged 10) tried it out and the portions were pretty big and he was satisfied. The menu is small with just three choices for main (giant fish finger, homemade sausage or chicken goujons). Mains are priced at £5.95 and served with homemade twice cooked chips and a little pot of ketchup plus a cup of juice. My three loved their mains and all cleared their plates. Children's meals are served in a bucket and spade which the children can take home which is a nice quirky touch. If I was to have one criticism of George's it would be that there are no vegetables on offer to children at all - I don't think I've ever encountered this at a restaurant and I would have liked to have seen the option of peas, corn on the cob or beans at the very least. I don't think the menu is very nutritious so for this reason, I would say George's is definitely the sort of place you visit as a treat. I am now wondering if part of the reason the kids loved it here so much is due to the lack of vegetables? Hmmm!
Main menu for grown-ups at George's Great British Kitchen
The main menu at George's is extensive and there is so much to chose from. Expect everything from burgers and pies to fish dishes and steak. I decided to order chicken in a basket (£13.25) for nostalgic reasons. As soon as I noticed it on the menu I was reminded of the bowling parties I used to attend as a child where we'd be served chicken and chips in a basket afterwards. George's version is way better than Megabowl's ever was and the chicken was beautifully spiced and crispy on the outside yet tender inside - very morish. It was served with homemade chips that really reminded me of chip shop chips, sweetcorn fritters (I wasn't a fan), grilled crispy bacon, homemade slaw and chipotle mayo which was perfect for dipping. My portion was huge too and my initial thoughts that I wouldn't pay £13.25 for chicken and chips were unfounded as I would definitely re-order this dish.
Steve like many Geordies is a fan of a Saveloy dip, especially from Dicksons Pork Shop. Personally, I can't think of anything worse but he loves them so when he spotted 'George's Meets Geordie Saveloy Pie' he could not resist. At £11.75 this dish is good value as there are lots of extras included - Saveloy sausage in a crisp pastry crust (Steve was very complimentary about the pastry), mushy peas, pork and onion stuffing, twice cooked chips, a jug of onion gravy and a pot of newkie brown salt filled his plate and he was very happy indeed. Steve didn't love this chips as much as me - he's more of a fries kind of guy. You can swap your chips for other types on ordering so Steve will remember to do this next time.
Desserts and Puddings at George's Great British Kitchen Newcastle
The kids had devoured their mains so we decided to treat them to dessert - again, there's nothing healthy here, it's a real sugar-fest so best kept as a treat but like all treats should be, this one is definitely worth it. Priced at £2.95, there is just one option for dessert for kids but it features lots of little parts. There are two fresh doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce, a scoop of ice cream, chocolate flake and candy floss. My children are very rarely allowed candy floss so they were having the best time ever eating this dessert as I think you can tell by Jack's face.
Steve and I really were very full from our mains but we are greedy and didn't want to be left out. We decided to order the trio of old school desserts to share. Featuring candyfloss custard, ice cream and steamed golden syrup sponge, despite being full to the brim we managed to eat the lot. My favourite was definitely the sponge pudding - it was lovely and light.
George's Great British Kitchen is fairly loud and I don't think I'd visit here for a romantic date. It is perfect for a casual date, for groups of friends or families who are looking for a treat. If you're looking to treat the children this summer or are looking for an ideal place to host a birthday meal, we really would recommend checking George's out. The staff are superb, nothing is too much trouble, the food is great and it's lots of fun for kids. Our three all gave George's a 10/10 and declared it to be the best place they've visited this year.
