NEW Railway Pioneers at Hopetown Darlington (it's FREE) 

Wagon Woods at Hopetown Darlington


Railway Pioneers is a brand new exhibition at Hopetown Darlington and showcases three historic locomotives together for the first time, including the original Locomotion No1.

This exhibition runs from 4 April until 22 June. It's free to visit but best to book a ticket ahead online to secure your spot (especially during school hols and weekends). 

Alongside the exhibition, there's a programme of free and low-cost events for families including seed planting workshops and RSPB bird activity days as well as the interactive areas, Wagon Woods (small charge) and Experiment! a state-of-the-art time travelling ride (small charge).

Hansel & Gretel at Gala Theatre, Durham 


A brand new interpretation of Hansel and Gretel by Northern Ballet is showing at Gala Durham on Saturday 19 April - the perfect treat for Easter weekend. 

Expect live music, bold sets, bright costumes and spectacular dancing as we join Hansel and Gretel on a walk through the woods. Unaware of the damage they are causing, they meet a host of spirited friends who help them take better care of the planet and show them the way.

Brainstorm by Mortal Fools 


Brainstorm is an unmissable performance to watch with teens and young people this Easter. It takes us on a whirlwind tour of the teenage brain with lots of reality checks, loads of laugh out loud moments, incredible performances, emotions, a sprinking of science and creative storytelling and use of the stage.

National Trust North East 



The popular National Trust Easter Egg Trails are back this Easter. Priced at £3.50 per trail (plus NT membership/admission), there are 10 activities to try and they're different at every location. You can try an egg and spoon obstacle course at Cragside, hobby horse racing at Gibside, create wild art at Seaton Delaval Hall and try an interactive sound challenge at Wallington. 

Each trail includes a trail sheet, bunny ears and dairy/vegan/free from chocolate treat at the end.

National Trust North Yorkshire 

Fountains Abbey


If you fancy a day trip or visiting somewhere new with your National Trust membership, Easter Egg Trails are taking place at Fountains Abbey, Beningbrough Hall and Nunnington from 5 April - 21 April and Ormesby Hall from 12 - 27 April. 

Activities include Welly Wanging at Ormesby Hall, Egg Crafts at Fountains Abbey, Sensory Boxes at Beningbrough and a Lion's Den Play Area at Nunnington. 

Trails are £3.50 each (+NT membership / admission) and include a trail sheet, bunny ears and dairy/vegan/free from egg.

Great North Museum 


Great North Museum is a fantastic FREE day out and they have lots of additional FREE activities planned for the Easter holidays including puppet making workshops, mouse tales (for under 5s), relaxed opening, sculpture workshops, Murray the Mole trails and more. There's also going to be a big puppet parade in the museum gardens on Saturday 19th April.

Discovery Museum 


Discovery Museum is FREE to visit and you must check out their FREE Steam to Green exhibition where you can fly a plane using solar power and create your own wind tunnel. In honour of Newcastle winning the cup, there's a temp small NUFC exhibition running until 10 April too. 

Additional school holiday activities include a fun egg hunt with a twist (using a robot to find your eggs), storytelling and crafts for 3-5 year olds, marble mazes, earth day challenges and the popular Discovery Brick Show Lego Weekend returns on 26 & 27 April.

Beamish Museum


Easter Family Activities take place at Beamish from 12 - 27 April this year. There's no need to book ahead and you can visit using your Beamish Unlimited Pass (or purchase one on arrival). 

Discover how Easter was celebrated in the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s with a full programme of activities across the site.
