Hotel Indigo Durham - Best for City Centre Luxury
We recently stayed at Hotel Indigo as a guest to my friend's wedding and I loved it! The hotel rooms (and the rest of the hotel) are super stylish and the whole building is beautiful. Our room was £119 B&B but there are rooms available this summer from just £89. What a bargain! The location is in the city centre and perfect for exploring Durham.
Rockliffe Hall - Best for 5* Family Luxury
Rockliffe Hall is rather fabulous and perfect for those looking for a spot of luxury with kids. They offer large apartments in the hotel grounds, childcare, children's afternoon tea and dining (their breakfast is particularly good) plus the fabulous MischMasch area, outdoor play area, giant outdoor games and splash pad. If you're looking for a treat, Rockliffe Hall will deliver. Check out our review of Rockliffe Hall here.
Ramside Hall - Best Spa Experience
I'm lucky to have been able to visit Ramside Hall twice in the last few months and it's fair to say I've fallen in love with the place. Gorgeous dining (I love the Thai restaurant and Steak restaurant in equal measures), beautiful rooms & friendly staff. What really stands out for me though is the spa area - I love it and I think it is my favourite spa in North East England. I'm even thinking about joining as a member in January to chase away those blues. There are two pools, an infinity pool, a giant outdoor hot tub, thermal suites, bubble pools and more. The staff are always lovely too and bring around little snacks throughout the day (use of the spa area and infinity pool are usually paid for in addition to your hotel room). Ramside Hall is one of those hotels where you are encouraged to walk to the spa from your room in your robe too.
South Causey Inn - Best Themed Suites
South Causey Inn is home to some pretty awesome suites - you can stay in a London Bus, book a spa suite for a girl's night in or stay in a treehouse-inspired room as we did. All suites come with their own hot tub for a special luxurious touch. Check out our review of South Causey Inn here.
The Kingslodge Inn - Best City Centre Pub with Rooms
The Kingslodge Inn is a bit of a hidden gem in Durham. Just a short walk from Durham City Centre, this warm and friendly pub offers a warm welcome and is a lovely place to relax a little way from the action. Check out my review of the Kingslodge Inn here.
Walworth Castle - Best Hotel with Wow Factor
Walworth Castle is a bit of a gem. Their four-poster suites look very inviting and if the food is anything to go by, staying here is a bit of a treat. Service at Walworth Castle is outstanding and I love that there's a play park, woodland trail and even a birds of prey centre in the castle grounds. Check out my review Walworth Castle here.
Park Head Country Hotel - Best for Visiting Kynren
A few years ago when H, H and J were a little younger, I didn't fancy driving home after taking them to see Kynren after an already late night. The Park Head Country Hotel is really well located for a place to rest your head after the show and their family suite is huge! The restaurant is popular so book ahead if you'd like to dine here too. Read our review featuring the Park Head Country Hotel and Kynren here.
Radisson Blu Durham - Best Value City Centre
We stayed in Radisson Blu years ago and managed a brilliant deal (less than £50). There are still some really good deals to be had and the hotel offers fantastic value (especially as it has a pool). Located on the river banks, it's an ideal location for Durham's bars, restaurants and Gala Theatre.
Morritt Hotel - Best Intimate Spa
Whenever I post about The Garage Spa at The Morritt Hotel, I always receive a huge response. The spa is intimate and personal and one of the best small spas in the UK. The hotel is pretty good too and the restaurant, in particular, is a real gem. Don't miss the rooftop hot tub! Read my review of the Garage Spa here and my review of the Morritt Hotel here

Wynyard Hall - Best Gardens, Grounds & Afternoon Tea
Credit - New Girl in Toon |
Wynyard Hall is set in the most beautiful gardens - they have an edible garden, rose garden, wild garden, walled garden and more. I also think their afternoon tea is the very best in Durham. We visited over Christmas a few years ago and it really was a treat. Check out a review of Wynyard Hall by New Girl in Toon here and our review of Afternoon Tea at Wynyard Hall here.
Seaton Lane Inn - Best for Exploring Durham Heritage Coast
Credit - Seaton Lane Inn |
The Seaton Lane Inn is a charming country pub just 5 minutes drive from Durham's Heritage Coastline and a perfect base for exploring the area. Expect cracking food too - the pub has just been awarded a coveted AA Diners Award. The rooms are boutique style and a warm welcome is guaranteed.
I have only included hotels I have personally stayed in or been recommended by numerous people - this is not an exhaustive list as I have not visited every hotel in the Durham area (what a job that would be). I'd love to know your favourite place to stay in/near County Durham.
