10 Outdoor Winter Evening Walks with Lighting Across North East England

 
A reader asked me for suggestions for places to visit for a walk in the winter evenings which are well-lit. I didn't really have many ideas so posed the question to my Facebook followers instead. Below are their suggestions, please let me know if you have any other ideas to add to the list. 

10 Outdoor Winter Walks with Lighting Across North East England



Walking in the evening is likely to be a lot less busy than during the day and is a good time to exercise and grab some fresh air if you are worried about crowded places but please do take care. 

Please note, I have not checked these walks myself but they have been personally recommended. Please stay safe when walking in the evenings and follow Government guidelines. 

Exhibition Park 




One reader mentioned that Exhibition Park in Newcastle City Centre is well lit around the lake and towards town. You can easily walk here from Haymarket and Claremont Road Car Park next door is free after 6pm (postcode NE2 4AA).

Newcastle Quayside around the Millenium Bridge 




Another reader suggested parking near Newcastle Arena and strolling along the Quayside. It is well lit and there will be other people around too. The bridges look lovely lit up on evening and kids can take their scooters. 

Tynemouth to Whitley Bay 




Lots of people recommended this route which is well-lit. You may not be able to see much of the sea but you will be able to hear it and enjoy the lights along the coastline. Why not buy some takeaway fish and chips to enjoy along the way? 

We usually park in the the Playhouse Car Park or Park Road Car Park which are both free (time limits may apply). 

Roker Seafront 




The walk along Roker seafront is a popular route and from 9 October 2020 - 31 January 2021, the promenade will be lined with illuminations along Roker Terrace and Whitburn Road. There won't be the usual additional events or festivals in Mowbray Park this year but the lights are free to enjoy. 

Park at Harbour View Car Park (SR6 0RQ).

Newbiggin Prom 


Most seafronts are a good bet for evening walks and one reader recommended Newbiggin as being particularly lovely. If you visit around sunset, the couple statue at sea will look particularly lovely. 

There is ample free parking in Newbiggin but you could try Church Point Car Park (NE64 6DN).

Royal Quays Marina 



I love the usual hustle and bustle of Royal Quays Marina but in the evening, it is a little more quiet. A nice place for a stroll and you can admire the many yachts on display too. When it is able to open, the Lock on the marina is a lush spot for a bite to eat / drink. 

There is ample free parking (NE29 6DU)

North Shields Fish Quay to Tynemouth Priory 

This is a lovely walk which we have enjoyed a few times - it is uphill from North Shields to Tynemouth but thankfully downhill on the way back. The views of the Priory and mouth of the Tyne are fab. When restrictions allow, there are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat / ice cream / drink along this route too. 

I recommend Low Lights Car Park (NE30 1JQ)

Gateshead Staithes to the Quayside 

The walk along the Quayside from Staithes is a popular route and one which several people recommended. 

Seaburn to Whitburn 

The walk from Seaburn to Whitburn is 1.5 miles each way but you can walk as far or little as you like along the seafront. There is parking at either end of this route or you could walk in the opposite direction towards Roker instead. 

Local Christmas Lights 


Not so much now, but when my kids were younger we used to love getting wrapped up and just walking around our local streets after school to look at the local Christmas decorations and decorated houses close to where we live in December then coming back home for hot chocolates. Sometimes the simplest of walks are the best. 

Be Prepared for Evening Walks (this section contains affiliate links)

  • I just love this hot drinks carrier. It is designed for 2 but I reckon if there are more of you, you could squeeze a couple of extra cups in (our just buy two sets). Perfect for taking your own hot chocolate and a great idea.

  • Have some fun and dress up for your walk with a bumper pack of glow sticks (with the added bonus that you will always be able to see each other)
