The question I am probably asked more often than any other is if I can recommend any hotel rooms which sleep 5 and do not break the bank. The struggle is real! Especially during peak travel times.
I have searched high and low to try and find a list of reasonably priced hotel rooms which sleep 5 in Northern England. Please note, I have not tried and tested these rooms myself so they are a starting point for your research rather than a list of recommendations. Family rooms tend to state they can sleep a maximum of 2 adults + kids so many of these may not be suitable for families with older teens or a group of 5 adults (not that I would want to share a room with teens anyway).
I hope you find this list useful, please email Sam@NorthEastFamilyFun.co.uk if you have any other recommendations for me to add to this list. The more the merrier! Prices and details checked March 2021. Please check details direct with hotels before booking as information can change.
Before we jump in, let's look at the alternatives.
Alternative Accommodation (which sleep 5) & Tips
Book Two Budget Hotel Rooms
We often book two Premier Inn rooms with their £29 deal so manage to stay overnight for less than £60 which is still an excellent deal. We have used this method to book Premier Inn Glasgow at the end of July and Premier Inn Doncaster Lakeside as a place to stay when we visit Yorkshire Wildlife Park later this summer (fingers crossed anyway).
When the kids were very young, we would sometimes sneak an extra child in and just top and tail but now they are older there is no chance of us doing that.
You can check out the latest Premier Inn Deals here.
We have stayed in many Premier Inns over the years and never had a problem. They are always clean and comfortable. Our favourites have been:
- Premier Inn Waterways (Stratford Upon Avon)
- Premier Inn Bispham (Blackpool)
- Premier Inn Chester Central North (Chester Zoo)
- Nottingham Castle Marina Hotel (good stop-off on the way to Wales)
- Cardiff City Centre South
- Premier Inn Hayle (St Ives)
- Premier Inn Manchester Piccadilly
- Premier Inn Liverpool One
- Premier Inn Scarborough
Stay, Play, Explore
Stay, Play, Explore is a fantastic short-break company which I would recommend. Their deals include an overnight stay plus entry to three attractions and offer fantastic value (read about our experience and more about booking here).
Some of the hotels in this deal allow you to sleep 5 in one room despite not being able to do this direct so it's worth a look.
YHA private rooms
We have stayed in a couple of Youth Hostels over the years and some of their private rooms are really nice and come with en-suites. Most rooms are made up of bunks only but some include a double too. Our favourite was YHA Sherwood Forest (read our full review here). They have private rooms for 5 with your own terrace from £69.
Search family rooms available at YHA here. PS Don't forget to book YHA through TopCashback to grab a bit of a discount. If you aren't a member, join for FREE using my referral link here.
City Centre Apartments / Air BnB
Sometimes staying in a city centre apartment or Air BnB works out as a better option than a hotel. Just check how many beds will actually be in the property as often I see places advertised as sleeping 5 but they only have two double beds which isn't ideal for us.
Booking.com is a good place to start when searching but I prefer to book direct when possible. If it is your first time booking with Air BnB, try to read as many reviews as possible before booking, check the t&cs carefully and look out for Superhosts where possible.
If booking through Booking.com, make sure you click through TopCashBack to earn some money back (use my referral link to join here for a little bonus if you aren't already a member).
Glamping / Lodges / Caravan
If visiting somewhere during the warmer months or for an extended stay, we often find that booking a lodge/glamping site or caravan works out to be a fair bit cheaper. I highly recommend ReadyCamp who host Safari Tents in a number of prime locations across the UK for less than £250 for 3 nights.
Caravan parks are also often a good alternative to a hotel - we have stayed for as little as £79 for 5 of us at a few Haven sites over the years. Even if you need to leave early, it can still work out far cheaper than a hotel.
Camping
When my children were younger and we were on a really tight budget, our go-to option was camping. Once you have bought your kit (or borrowed), you can find sites for around £20-£30 across peak dates and there is more than enough room for 5.
Give hotels a call
Often when searching online, you will only be given a limited number of options. Give the hotel a call, explain your circumstances and see if they can squeeze in an extra bed. We have stayed in many rooms over the years which have only allowed up to 4 people to book online yet have ample room and can easily sleep more. Sometimes hotels have accommodated us, it's always worth a phone call - Matfen Hall and the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland are examples of this.
I also know some families who bring their own blow up bed and blankets for little ones.

You will find The Jonas Centre in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales.
