The accommodation is located on a (non-working) farm in a converted stable barn with uninterrupted views of the countryside and coastline. The properties are child and dog-friendly and all come with their own private enclosed garden or patio area. They have all been finished to an extremely high standard - expect lots of luxurious touches and the latest tech. We didn't want to leave!
Saltburn-by-the-Sea is around a 1 hour 20 minute drive South of Newcastle and is perfectly located for visiting Teesside, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Staithes and the North York Moors.
Saltburn Holiday Lets are around a 20 minute walk down to the beach. You are up a hill so keep this in mind for the walk back. Parking is also available in the town and it is just a 3 minute drive if you wish to save your legs.
When you stay at Saltburn Holiday Lets, you feel as if no expense has been spared and it really is a treat. Just look at the towels below. Honestly the softest towels ever. My kids asked why they weren't hard like ours and if this is how towels are supposed to feel like. Cheeky!
As well as your own private gardens / patio areas, guests have shared use of this grassed area to the front of the property which is perfect for letting the kids run around or exercising the dog.
There were lots of little touches I appreciated like little shelves and plug sockets next to the beds, plenty of mirrors and lovely soft furnishings. The kids were pleased to see there were USB plugs too as they always just bring their phone charger wire and always forget their actual plug!
Your accommodation comes with your own parking area and there are fresh flowers in both the garden and the accommodation too.
Each bedroom has their own dressing station with hairdryer, mirror, sockets and a shelf. Perfect if you are staying with teens!
Oh and there is various local art work dotted about the walls which added a lovely local touch.
The welcome book is comprehensive and includes local restaurant menus, dog-friendly pubs, takeaway menus, days out ideas, shop/supermarket locations, local attraction leaflets and more.
The only negative I have about the Farm Retreat is that the sofa only really sits 4 (maybe 5 if your kids are small) which isn't ideal if there are 5/6/7 of you all wanting to watch a film together. There is additional seating and it is high backed but it's not the same as a sofa snuggle. They are limited due to the room shape though and it's not a deal breaker for me.
Saltburn Holiday Lets are a small family business and the owners truly care about your experience and will go out of their way to make your stay a special one. No request is too big or too small and they encourage feedback. They have clearly put their heart and soul into this renovation / business and I wish them every success (which I am sure it will be).
I am going to write a more in depth post with ideas for things to do in Saltburn, Redcar and the surrounding areas soon. There is so much to see and do here and I think it deserves it's own post, especially as I had so many suggestions for places to visit that we just couldn't squeeze into our break. I thought to end this post, I would round up some of the things we got up to and give you a little idea of what to expect. We paid for all of the below experiences ourselves and they are not part of the advert.
The Jack & Jill
The Jack & Jill is a lovely tea room around 15 minutes drive from Saltburn Holiday Lets. Located at the entrance of the North York Moors National Park, they serve delicious homemade cakes, brunch, afternoon tea and more. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor play area, adventure golf (£10 per family - no booking), ping pong and takeaway treats with outdoor seating from the Sneaky Fox hatch at the side alongside beautiful views of Scaling Dam. Find out more here.
This is a fantastic rainy day idea for tweens / teens / gaming enthusiasts. For £14.99 per person, guests can enjoy 2 hours unlimited gaming on state of the art consoles and racing games with access to hundreds of games plus they will receive three VR tokens to use on the VR headsets / consoles. There is a cafe for parents (who do not need to pay to spectate) and if your kids are aged 8+, you can leave them in the hands of the fantastic staff and enjoy a spot of shopping nearby before collecting them at the end of the session. Find out more here.
You can walk to Valley Gardens from Saltburn Holiday Lets in around 20 minutes or it is a 2 minute drive down to the sea front (park in Cat Nab Car Park on the sea front, postcode TS12 1NY).
The gardens are a lovely place for a stroll. There is a mini train which runs from 12noon-4pm on selected weekends and school holidays, a small play area, an Italian Garden, a Woodland Centre, Victorian Tearoom, streams to paddle in, lots of green space and you can walk along the Cleveland Way / to the viaduct too.
Camfields Espresso & Juice Bar
On one evening we enjoyed a walk along Saltburn Pier. You can watch people fish from the end (or join in yourself), play mini golf on the sea front or enjoy the amusement arcade. Beach huts can be hired via Marshalls Beach Huts. We did hire one but had to cancel due to bad weather. Some other time!
There is a Victorian tram running down the cliffside but I have heard it won't be back for this season. Fingers crossed for next year. Honestly though, there is SO much more to Saltburn than the little tram. Do not let the fact that it is out of operation put you off visiting. Life is too short.
Lots of you recommended dinner at Alessi's in Saltburn Town Centre. It was a really nice spot for a cheap and cheerful Happy Hour Pizza and the atmosphere was great. Find out more here.
Lemon Tops from Pacitto's
Redcar is a short drive from Saltburn and on the sea front you will find Pacitto's - the place where the famous Lemon Tops were invented. Delicious and very refreshing. I also couldn't get over how beautiful and unspoilt Redcar beach was. Why have I never visited here before? So quiet too.
Just a short drive from Saltburn, Kirkleatham is brilliant and a good low-cost option for a day out. First of all, you can access the grounds with a lovely playground and picnic tables alongside the museum which is packed with Anglo-Saxon and local mining history and hands on fun. There is also a woodland trail to complete. All completely free with no booking required. Find out more.
Kirkleatham Owl Centre shares the same grounds and is such a bargain (We paid £12.50 for unlimited access across the day for us all). You can learn about and meet various owls, exotic birds and birds of prey alongside meerkats and guinea pigs. There are regular flying displays and demos across the day too. Give them a ring to find out what's on. Find out more.
PS - so many of you recommended Chocolinis and Signals in Saltburn. I am so sorry we didn't have time to pop in on this visit. Next time!
