Saltburn Holiday Lets (Dog friendly) : A Review

This is an advertisement for August 2021. Any shares / amendments after this date have not been asked or paid for.

We stayed at Saltburn Holiday Lets in July 2021. This set of luxury self catering accommodation is split across four 'lets' which each sleep between 2-7 guests. You can hire the whole place too (will sleep up to 14 guests) and the location is perfect for a private family gathering.

The accommodation is located on a (non-working) farm in a converted stable barn with uninterrupted views of the countryside and coastline. The properties are child and dog-friendly and all come with their own private enclosed garden or patio area. They have all been finished to an extremely high standard - expect lots of luxurious touches and the latest tech. We didn't want to leave!

Saltburn Holiday Lets (Dog friendly) : A Review

We stayed in Farm Retreat which is the largest accommodation on offer here (sleeping up to 7 guests across 3 bedrooms). My review will be based on Farm Retreat but all of the properties here have been finished to the same high standard. Find out more about the other properties on offer here.

Saltburn Holiday Lets are located just one mile from Saltburn-by-the-Sea (which is either in North Yorkshire or Teesside depending on who you ask). This Victorian seaside town is full of charm and packed with lots of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Don't expect to find a Pizza Express here but you will find lovely restaurants which are loved by locals and visitors alike.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is around a 1 hour 20 minute drive South of Newcastle and is perfectly located for visiting Teesside, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Staithes and the North York Moors.

Saltburn Holiday Lets are around a 20 minute walk down to the beach. You are up a hill so keep this in mind for the walk back. Parking is also available in the town and it is just a 3 minute drive if you wish to save your legs.

When you stay at Saltburn Holiday Lets, you feel as if no expense has been spared and it really is a treat. Just look at the towels below. Honestly the softest towels ever. My kids asked why they weren't hard like ours and if this is how towels are supposed to feel like. Cheeky!

One of my very favourite things to do here was to watch the sunset over the sea from the terrace / garden. What a view and so relaxing.

Saltburn Holiday Lets are accessed by a long drive. At the end you will find the main farm house (private), plus the four holiday lets. Although you are next to each other, it still feels super private and peaceful and the way it has been designed is very clever to maximise private space. Our garden didn't overlook anyone and although other guests were staying in the accommodation next to us, we didn't hear them at all and felt as if we were the only ones there.

As well as your own private gardens / patio areas, guests have shared use of this grassed area to the front of the property which is perfect for letting the kids run around or exercising the dog.

Below gives you an idea of how the site layout works. We stayed in the green accommodation. Please note the brown utility area which is shared. We didn't use it but here you have access to a washing machine / freezer etc..... if needed. Our kitchen was more then equipped for our short break but if we had stayed longer, I am sure access to a washing machine would have been handy.

Now let me talk about the tech on offer here. Steve was in his element. Our accommodation offered complimentary WiFi, SMART TVs in every room (which was brill for signing into our own Netflix / YouTube accounts), an ice machine which is something you don't think you need until you have access to one, a coffee machine, a TV in the bath, high-end hair dryers in every bedroom, the best shower I have ever encountered and more.

Steve and the kids made full use of the SMART TVs and watched The Hobbit every night. I have to say, it's not for me!

I'm more of a Grand Designs in the bath kind of gal.......

There were lots of little touches I appreciated like little shelves and plug sockets next to the beds, plenty of mirrors and lovely soft furnishings. The kids were pleased to see there were USB plugs too as they always just bring their phone charger wire and always forget their actual plug!

Your accommodation comes with your own parking area and there are fresh flowers in both the garden and the accommodation too.

There is one main family bathroom plus an additional loo in Farm Retreat and what a bathroom it is. The shower was epic! There were loads of different functions but my favourite had to be the waterfall and rainwater settings. So good and the perfect way to wake up. It even encouraged the kids to shower more. Water pressure and temperature was never an issue.

Also the bath of dreams with an inbuilt TV. The kids just couldn't believe it. We had an issue where it stopped working at one point but it turned out it just needed a new battery in the remote. I messaged the accommodation owners and they sorted it within an hour. Brilliant service.

Each bedroom has their own dressing station with hairdryer, mirror, sockets and a shelf. Perfect if you are staying with teens!

Onto the bedrooms and Farm Retreat sleeps up to 7 guests across 3 bedrooms. There is a triple bunk room and two doubles. All beds are made on arrival with crisp bed linen and there is lots of natural light as well as blinds and radiators. Each room has their own hanging rail and drawers and has been finished in a contemporary yet welcoming style. We loved the extra blankets on the beds which were perfect for snuggling on the sofa with after a day exploring.

Oh and there is various local art work dotted about the walls which added a lovely local touch.

Self check in is from 3pm and check out is a leisurely 11am. We found out accommodation to be immaculately clean and I absolutely loved the welcome hamper which included fresh flowers, cereal and james, tea and coffee, biscuits, crisps, a pack of playing cards, Saltburn rock and postcards. Super thoughtful. Another lovely touch is a proper bottle of fresh milk and juice waiting for you in the fridge and a little cleaning pack (including ample dishwasher tablets) under the sink.

The welcome book is comprehensive and includes local restaurant menus, dog-friendly pubs, takeaway menus, days out ideas, shop/supermarket locations, local attraction leaflets and more.

I rarely cook on holiday but our kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could need and more. I was especially impressed with the wide range of glassware on offer. The main living area is all open plan and on a nice day it is lovely to throw open the patio doors and benefit from the sea air.

The only negative I have about the Farm Retreat is that the sofa only really sits 4 (maybe 5 if your kids are small) which isn't ideal if there are 5/6/7 of you all wanting to watch a film together. There is additional seating and it is high backed but it's not the same as a sofa snuggle. They are limited due to the room shape though and it's not a deal breaker for me.

We genuinely did not want to leave! Saltburn Holiday Lets are stunning and such a good base for exploring the area. I love that they are dog-friendly too and on a final note, I have to say that everyone we met in Saltburn and the surrounding area was so welcoming and friendly. We had such a brilliant little break here.

Saltburn Holiday Lets are a small family business and the owners truly care about your experience and will go out of their way to make your stay a special one. No request is too big or too small and they encourage feedback. They have clearly put their heart and soul into this renovation / business and I wish them every success (which I am sure it will be).

I am going to write a more in depth post with ideas for things to do in Saltburn, Redcar and the surrounding areas soon. There is so much to see and do here and I think it deserves it's own post, especially as I had so many suggestions for places to visit that we just couldn't squeeze into our break. I thought to end this post, I would round up some of the things we got up to and give you a little idea of what to expect. We paid for all of the below experiences ourselves and they are not part of the advert.

The Jack & Jill

The Jack & Jill is a lovely tea room around 15 minutes drive from Saltburn Holiday Lets. Located at the entrance of the North York Moors National Park, they serve delicious homemade cakes, brunch, afternoon tea and more. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor play area, adventure golf (£10 per family - no booking), ping pong and takeaway treats with outdoor seating from the Sneaky Fox hatch at the side alongside beautiful views of Scaling Dam. Find out more here.

The Gaming Hideaway, Thornaby

This is a fantastic rainy day idea for tweens / teens / gaming enthusiasts. For £14.99 per person, guests can enjoy 2 hours unlimited gaming on state of the art consoles and racing games with access to hundreds of games plus they will receive three VR tokens to use on the VR headsets / consoles. There is a cafe for parents (who do not need to pay to spectate) and if your kids are aged 8+, you can leave them in the hands of the fantastic staff and enjoy a spot of shopping nearby before collecting them at the end of the session. Find out more here.

The Spa Hotel, Saltburn

The Spa Hotel is open to non-residents for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks. Located in a dreamy spot overlooking the coast, both the food on offer and service were fantastic and I would certainly recommend dining here as a bit of a treat. Find out more here.

Valley Gardens, Saltburn

You can walk to Valley Gardens from Saltburn Holiday Lets in around 20 minutes or it is a 2 minute drive down to the sea front (park in Cat Nab Car Park on the sea front, postcode TS12 1NY).

The gardens are a lovely place for a stroll. There is a mini train which runs from 12noon-4pm on selected weekends and school holidays, a small play area, an Italian Garden, a Woodland Centre, Victorian Tearoom, streams to paddle in, lots of green space and you can walk along the Cleveland Way / to the viaduct too.

Camfields Espresso & Juice Bar

Camfields is right on the sea front by the Cat Nab car park and a popular spot with local dog walkers. They serve decent coffee, stuffed croissants, breakfast sandwiches, cakes, ice creams and fresh juices to take away. A lovely view of both the sea and the stream running into Valley Gardens and very friendly staff. Find out more here.

Saltburn Pier

On one evening we enjoyed a walk along Saltburn Pier. You can watch people fish from the end (or join in yourself), play mini golf on the sea front or enjoy the amusement arcade. Beach huts can be hired via Marshalls Beach Huts. We did hire one but had to cancel due to bad weather. Some other time!

There is a Victorian tram running down the cliffside but I have heard it won't be back for this season. Fingers crossed for next year. Honestly though, there is SO much more to Saltburn than the little tram. Do not let the fact that it is out of operation put you off visiting. Life is too short.

Dinner at Alessi's

Lots of you recommended dinner at Alessi's in Saltburn Town Centre. It was a really nice spot for a cheap and cheerful Happy Hour Pizza and the atmosphere was great. Find out more here.

Lemon Tops from Pacitto's

Redcar is a short drive from Saltburn and on the sea front you will find Pacitto's - the place where the famous Lemon Tops were invented. Delicious and very refreshing. I also couldn't get over how beautiful and unspoilt Redcar beach was. Why have I never visited here before? So quiet too.

Gabrielle's Ice Cream Parlour, Planet Kidz, Fairground Rides and Arcades

Also on Redcar sea front you will find Gabrielle's Ice Cream Parlour - a 50s style diner serving delicious ice cream, shakes and treats. Planet Kidz upstairs is a giant soft play and perfect if the weather turns. There are several traditional arcades and little fairground rides along Redcar prom and you can climb the Redcar Beacon for free.

Kirkleatham Museum, Grounds and Owl Centre

Just a short drive from Saltburn, Kirkleatham is brilliant and a good low-cost option for a day out. First of all, you can access the grounds with a lovely playground and picnic tables alongside the museum which is packed with Anglo-Saxon and local mining history and hands on fun. There is also a woodland trail to complete. All completely free with no booking required. Find out more.

Kirkleatham Owl Centre shares the same grounds and is such a bargain (We paid £12.50 for unlimited access across the day for us all). You can learn about and meet various owls, exotic birds and birds of prey alongside meerkats and guinea pigs. There are regular flying displays and demos across the day too. Give them a ring to find out what's on. Find out more.

I feel like I squeezed quite a bit into our short break in Saltburn but also that I only just scratched the surface too. It is a lovely destination for a family holiday and no doubt somewhere I will revisit in the future. It has everything you need (and more) for a traditional seaside break and Saltburn Holiday Lets are a fantastic base from which to see it all.

PS - so many of you recommended Chocolinis and Signals in Saltburn. I am so sorry we didn't have time to pop in on this visit. Next time!
