In 2023 I am planning on walking quite a lot of the North East Coast and thought it would be handy to share the different walks you can enjoy which are particularly suitable for kids as one round up post. I will add to this post as I explore more of the coastline so do bookmark this post to come back to.
North of the Tyne Coastal Walks for Kids
Beadnell, Seahouses and Bamburgh
It's around a 1.8 mile walk between Beadnell and Seahouses and a 3.5 mile walk between Seahouses and Bamburgh. You can catch the bus back for the return journey if needed and these walks are ideal for completing during a short break in the area.
There is loads to do along the way including soft play, amusements, boat trips, castles, playgrounds and more. Read our full guide here.
Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle
It's brilliant for primary school aged kids/tweens or teens though with a playground in Craster village and a lovely pub too. Read our full guide to this walk here.
Blyth to Seaton Sluice
Whitley Bay to St Mary's Island
Whitley Bay to St Mary's Island is easily accessed by public transport (bus or Metro) and there is plenty of parking. It's 2 miles each way and suitable for pushchairs. There is a playground in Whitley Bay and St Mary's Island is perfect for rockpooling (do check tide times). You will often find a takeaway van in the island car park which also sells crabbing buckets and nets.
You could break the walk up with ice creams from Rendez Vous or mini golf / foot golf on the sea front. Find out more about this walk here.
Whitley Bay to Tynemouth
This walk is 2-3 miles each way (depending on where you start and finish) and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. There are loads of places to stop off en route including playgrounds, ice cream kiosks an aquarium and even a maze. Accessible by public transport (Metro or bus) or car. Read our full guide to this walk here.
Newbiggin by the Sea
This 2km linear route has a playground at either end, an ice cream parlour, lifeboat station and maritime museum on route. The path is surfaced, wide and mostly flat so perfect for wheelchairs and pushchairs and there is step free access to the beach with beach wheelchair hire available. Read our full guide to this walk here.
South of the Tyne Coastal Walks for Kids
Seaham Harbour to Blast Beach
There is free parking and plenty of places to stop for ice cream or a bite to eat. Seaham is also super dog friendly. I can't wait to take Fozzy. Read our full guide here.
Roker to Seaburn
This walk is around 1.5 miles each way, flat, pushchair/wheelchair friendly and there are lots of public toilets and seating. You'll find plenty of places for takeaway / sit in drinks and ice creams and there are two playgrounds plus amusement arcades. Read our full guide to this walk here.
