Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England

This post will share a round up of all of our personal recommendations for dog-friendly places to stay in North East England.

Copper Beech Cottages, Rothbury

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Copper Beach Cottages

This was Fozzy's first holiday and it was absolutely ideal for a first trip away. These dog-friendly cottages overlook Rothbury Golf Course and are just a short walk into Rothbury Town where you can enjoy riverside walks and visit some of the local pubs and restaurants (many of which are dog friendly).

There are lots of dog walks in the area and we enjoyed a visit to Cragside Formal Gardens which are just a few miles from the cottage.

Read our full review of Copper Beech Cottages here and then head over to the Copper Beech Cottages website to check prices and book.

What I loved:

  • Fantastic enclosed garden with grass which meant Fozzy could have a good run around in safety
  • Laminate flooring downstairs
  • Dog bowl and treats provided
  • Decked area between grass and cottage made cleaning paws much easier
  • Full size freezer - ideal for raw feeding
  • Washer/dryer if you need to wash towels
  • Easy walking distance to the town with lots of dog friendly places
  • Very reasonable prices - follow their social media for special offers

I would 100% stay here again (and I imagine we will in the next few years). I actually can't think of a single negative.

Cresswell Towers

Cresswell Towers

Steve's parents have a holiday home at Cresswell Towers and we usually stay once or twice a year. If you're looking for a holiday park that's good for dogs, Cresswell Towers is ideal and we can't wait to visit again this year.

Here's why we love it:

  • Dogs are welcome in the clubhouse bar area before 8pm. Staff are lush and will provide dog water and treats
  • Dog friendly pubs and cafes within easy reach
  • Next door to Cresswell Beach which is dog friendly year round and pretty quiet
  • 15 minute walk to the Drift Cafe which has a heated and covered dog friendly area
  • Lots of dog friendly attractions in the vicinity including Amble boat trips, Woodhorn, Warkworth Castle
  • Very reasonable prices

The only negative for me is that there are lots of rabbits on site which made taking Fozzy for a walk in the evening a little tricky. He loved watching them from the caravan window at night though and obviously, caravans don't have enclosed gardens. We will be visiting Cresswell Towers again this year. We love it.

Find out more and book here and you can read my guide to visiting Cresswell Towers here (although this was published before Fozzy joined our family)

Harbour Way Cottage, Seahouses

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Harbour Way Seahouses

Harbour Way Cottage is a luxury 4 bedroomed cottage in the heart of Seahouses Village. We stayed with Fozzy in January 2023 and you can read more about our stay here.

Reasons we loved it:

  • Large entrance hall, ideal for cleaning paws / storing leads etc....
  • Laminate flooring downstairs
  • Central location with lots of dog walks from the door and a beach at the end of the street
  • Dog friendly pubs within a few minutes walk
  • Lots of dog-friendly places to visit in the area including boat trips to the Farne Islands and Bamburgh Castle
  • Full size freezer and washing machine

The only negative is that there isn't an enclosed garden - it's a shared rear courtyard. It wasn't too much of an issue for us as the harbour area / beach was just at the end of our street and we were out for long walks during the day. Find out more and book here.

Herding Hill Wigwams nr Hadrian's Wall

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Herding Hill Farm

We had a wonderful stay at Herding Hill Wigwams near Hadrian's Wall with Fozzy and if you're looking for a dog-friendly glamping site in Northumberland, I would certainly recommend. You can read my full Herding Hill Farm Review here.

Reasons we love it here:

  • Enclosed dog field on site where you can let your dog off lead
  • Lots of dog walks in the area and attractions to visit including Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland National Park
  • Wigwams have a dog loop on the front of them where you can tether your dog
  • Good dog facilities including water refill stations and complimentary poo bags
  • Wigwams come with their own fridge
The only negative I can think of is that wigwams are fairly small but it would be the same at any glamping site. Find out more and book here.

Saltburn Holiday Lets

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Saltburn Holiday Lets

We stayed at Satlburn Holiday Lets before Fozzy joined our family (read our full review here). It's one of the best short breaks we've ever had and they are super dog friendly and definitely worth including in this round up. We will 100% be staying here again with Fozzy at some point in the future.

They are continuously making improvements and since our stay they have added a playground and enclosed dog exercise field.

Why I love it here:

  • Multiple well behaved dogs allowed
  • Enclosed exercise field on site and some properties have enclosed gardens
  • Dog towels, dog bowls, dog treats, dog tags all provided
  • Laminate flooring
  • Communal utility room with washer/dryer and freezer
  • Lots of dog-friendly pubs/cafes/things to do in the area including the Cleveland Way on your doorstep
  • Excellent prices
  • A selection of cottages / apartments which can be hired individually or together (up to 14 guests combined)

Shepherd's Retreat, Beadnell

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - SHepherd's Retreats Beadnell

Another dog-friendly place we stayed at before Fozzy joined our family. Shepherd's Retreats are two luxury glamping huts with hot tubs and a fabulous place to stay. Read our full review here.

Why we love it:

  • Homemade dog treats
  • Water and food bowls
  • A hosepipe to wash sandy paws
  • Dog towels
  • Enclosed garden
  • Lots of dog friendly places to visit in the vicinity including beaches, pubs and attractions
  • The huts sleep 4 and 2 and are next door to each other / can be hired together

Again, the only negative I can think of here is that it is quite small but that's to be expected with glamping.

Stay Coastal, Whitley Bay

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Stay Coastal Whitley Bay

These holiday apartments in the heart of Whitley Bay are perfect for visiting with dogs (who are welcome to stay in the ground floor rooms). You can read our full review here (we stayed before Fozzy joined our family).

Why we love it here:

  • Shared enclosed garden
  • Central location in Whitley Bay with loads of dog friendly pubs and cafes
  • Very easy access to the beach
  • A few minutes walk to Whitley Bay Metro Station where you can travel across the North East (dogs travel for free)
  • 1 night stays are permitted during off-peak periods

AGL Holidays at Bokenfield Country Park

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Bockenfield Country Park

Another place we stayed before Fozzy joined our family but somewhere we found to be extremely dog friendly. Bockenfield Park is just off the A1 near Felton and AGL holidays (who are dog owners themselves) own two private luxury lodges on site. Read our review here.

Here's why we love them:

  • Dogs are welcome on the furniture (you need to bring your own throws and wipe their paws)
  • Dogs stay at no additional charge
  • Lots of dog walks, day trips and pubs in the area
  • Enclosed decked area
  • Complimentary dog treats
  • Comprehensive welcome pack with lots of info about dog-friendly places to visit
  • Dogs welcome at the onsite Time Out Tavern and Crazy Horse Saloon

Acorn Leisure at Felmoor Park

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Felmoor Park

Acorn Leisure is just across the road from AGL Holidays on Felmoor Park. We stayed a few years ago and loved it. You can read our review here.

Why I love it:

  • Enclosed decked area
  • Dogs welcome at the onsite Crazy Horse Saloon and Time Out Tavern
  • Dog walks around the site
  • Lots of dog friendly places to visit in the area
  • Dogs stay at no additional cost
  • A few properties can be hired together next to each other - ideal for dog-friendly get togethers
Find out more and book here.

Dog Friendly Holidays Across the UK

I wanted to include a section in this post featuring other dog-friendly places we have stayed within a 3 hour drive of Northumberland.

Center Parcs Whinfell Forest

You can read about our experience of visiting Center Parcs Whinfell Forest with a dog. Short version is, we did enjoy our visit but also had to make some compromises!

Dog-friendly AirBnB near Knaresborough

We stayed in a dog-friendly AirBnB near Knaresborough in the summer. It was a fantastic base for a break and we were able to visit Mother Shipton's Cave with Fozzy and there is a fantastic dog friendly pub in the village a short walk away. Read our full review from this trip here.

Low Costa Mill, Pickering

Enclosed dog exercise field

We stayed at Low Costa Mill near Pickering with Fozzy in the summer and absolutely loved it. They are a group of 7 cottages with fantastic facilities including an enclosed dog exercise field which was brilliant for Fozzy.

There is loads to do in the area with dogs including Eden Camp, North York Moors Railway & Ryedale Folk Museum. I would definitely recommend this area to those looking for things to do with dogs. Read our full review here.

Drummohr Glamping and Camping, Edinburgh

Dog Friendly Holidays in North East England - Drummohr Glamping in Edinburgh

This is the sister site to Herding Hill Farm and I was in two minds about bringing Fozzy along. Reason being, we were there to visit Edinburgh Christmas Markets and I knew they'd be extremely busy and not really suitable for him (I was right). In the end, we left him at home with the older teens but I would not hesitate to book again and bring him along.

This site has a dedicated dog walk, lodges with enclosed decking and easy transport links into Edinburgh where you will find lots of dog friendly pubs and places to visit (did you know, dogs can visit Camera Obscura?) as well as being a short drive from Portobello which is a super dog-friendly beach and town.

Read our full review here.

High Oaks Grange Pickering

Our writer Gaia stayed with High Oaks Grange in Pickering. They really appreciated the dog welcome pack, enclosed garden (which is rare with this kind of accommodation) and private hot tub with lots of fantastic dog-friendly attractions on their doorstep. Read their full review here: High Oaks Grange Review

Darwin Forest

Darwin Forest is a lovely 5* site with fantastic facilities in the Peak District and Fozzy had such a fab stay here. Dogs are welcome in the bar and beer garden, some lodges come with a special dog shower, there is wooden flooring throughout and enclosed verandahs.

There are plenty of walks to enjoy on the site too and dog-friendly attractions nearby. Fozzy loved taking the cable car up to Heights of Abraham and visiting the aquarium in Matlock Bath. Read our full review here.

Did you know we have a dedicated Dog Friendly North East Instagram page? Why not follow along for more dog-friendly places to visit.

We have two trips booked so far in 2023. We are taking Fozzy to Center Parcs with us in Spring. Most people describe Center Parcs as dog tolerant rather than dog friendly but I think he's going to enjoy it.

Then we are staying at an AirBnB in Central Scotland which welcomes dogs by prior arrangement in the summer. We have stayed there before and fell in love with the place. We're going to take Fozzy to visit Falkirk and Blackness while we are there which I can't wait as we love both of these places.
