Whitley Bay to Tynemouth Pushchair Friendly Walk

This post is going to share a lovely coastal walk in North Tyneside which is brilliant to enjoy with kids and/or a dog, with friends, as a couple or even by yourself. It's a fantastic walk for all occasions! 

Reasons I love this walk 

• Easy, flat and pushchair friendly 
• Linear 2-3 mile route. You can walk back to make it a 4-6 mile route or catch the Metro (it takes less than 5 minutes) 
• There are 2 playgrounds along the route 
• Lots of cafes, ice cream kiosks and pubs to stop along the way 
• Dogs on leads welcome 
• You can go down onto the sand if you like or just stay on the prom 
• It's part of our 'Visit 12 North East Lighthouses in One Day Challenge'
• Easy to get to the start point by bus, Metro or car

Google Maps tell me that this walk is 2.1 miles from Whitley Bay Metro Station to Tynemouth Metro Station however we did walk down onto the beach and walk along the sand and made little detours to stop for coffee etc.... and my actual walking route was measured as 2.9 miles the last time we did this. 



It's very difficult to get lost on this walk. Start in Whitley Bay, face the sea and follow the coastline towards Tynemouth keeping the sea on your left hand side as you walk. 



We usually spend around 2.5 hours doing this walk which includes the walk from Whitley Bay to Tynemouth, a few stop offs and then catching the Metro back. It is possible to walk it in around 40 minutes each way with no stop offs. 

We like to start at Whitley Bay Metro Station which is obviously really easy to get to by public transport (it's served by both Metro and buses). This station has a free car park with 76 spaces (although it is a little tight in places) and 9/10 we managed to get parked here or in the surrounding streets (we like the free section of Esplanade). I highly recommend starting your walk with a takeaway from Pablo Eggs Go Bao on Station Road just along from the Metro Station. Their breakfast Bao buns are just the best! Sausage pattie, egg, cheese, hash brown and siracha. Perfection! If you haven't tried one yet, use this walk as an excuse to go. 



Either order from the yellow hatch on arrival or pre-order ahead online. They offer doggy sausages too. 

If you're visiting later in the day, I also recommend Pranzo (also on Station Road, just next to Pablos). This cute Italian deli and trattoria serves authentic Italian food and is so good (read my full review here). Dogs are welcome in their outdoor areas and their lunch deal is a bargain at £25 for 4 dishes and 2 drinks. 

Once you're fuelled up, walk down Esplanade until you reach the sea front. Turn right and walk along the sea front towards Tynemouth always keeping the sea on your left hand side. 

We like to stop at Cullercoats Coffee for takeaway coffee and sit on the benches overlooking Cullercoats Bay. The view is gorgeous and there's a playground for kids (I would say more suitable for younger kids) here overlooking the sea too.

There are a few places to stop off for ice cream along Cullercoats Prom too. 

After your coffee / playground / ice cream stop, continue the walk along to Tynemouth. There is the option to go down onto the beach at Longsands which I highly recommend (although obviously, sand isn't really suitable for puschairs) or just continue walking along the promenade. There is a ramp at both ends or there are steps too. 



If you are looking for refreshments here, the View and Crusoes are at either end of the beach and both places I'd recommend (dogs outside only). 



Make sure you check the dog rules for the beaches in North Tyneside, especially if you are visiting from May - September which is when the main restrictions are in place. 

Alternatively, if you don't go down onto the beach and stay on the prom, you can cross over the road and visit Tynemouth Park. Here you will find: 

• A playground 
• A boating lake 
• Dinosaur adventure golf 
• Jungle wipeout inflatables 
• Pirate maze 

After your walk along Longsands Beach, King Edwards Bay is next. This beach is lovely and also accessible by steps or a ramp but do warned, it's quite a walk down. 



If you do want to stop off here, the seafood from Riley's Fish Shack is not to be missed! 



You could also pop into Tynemouth Priory which overlooks the bay and provides excellent views of the Mouth of the Tyne. It's free to visit for English Heritage Members (charges apply to non-members) and dog friendly too. 

Tynemouth Village is just above King Edwards Bay and lovely for a potter. There are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat or drinks and many places are dog friendly. There is a nice selection of independent shops too - we always try and pop into The Dog Hoose with Fozzy to pick up some doggy treats. 



When visiting Tynemouth we always try and visit The Priory Pub. It's a 'proper' pub, dog friendly and has reasonable prices. Kids are welcome too and they have some brill deals and offers including a Thursday Night Steak Night.

Once you're at Tynemouth, you have a few options. You could either continue your walk along to North Shields and maybe visit Northumberland Park (it's a lovely playground / walk) or walk down onto the Fish Quay. 



Or you could retrace your steps and walk back to Whitley Bay. 



Or you could hop onto the Metro and travel back to Whitley Bay. It only takes around 5 minutes and is two stops from Tynemouth.
