5 Things to do in Kirkleatham

Kirkleatham is a village in Redcar which although small in area, has a lot to offer. You can easily spend a low-cost full day out here.

We have visited many times and I'm sure we will be back again soon. This post will share some of the things we like to do in Kirkleatham.

All attractions are a short walk from each other
Accessible by bus (63 and 81 - alight at Kirkleatham)
Accessible for wheelchair users (and there is a wheelchair swing in the playground)
Two cafes & picnic tables available
Dogs on leads welcome in the woodland walk and Kirkleatham Walled Garden
Bring a change of clothes for the water play area in the walled garden

Kirkleatham Owl Centre.

We all love owls in our house and everyone has their favourite, whether it's Hedwig for Sam or Plop (The Owl who was afraid of the dark) for me, they are birds that are so full of character.

Kirkleatham Owl Centre is one of the oldest dedicated owl centres in the world. Focusing on education and conservation they are a great experience for any owl lovers. They also have a selection of other animals including Meerkats, Vulture, Emu, Porcupine and Kookaburra.

During school holidays they often run flying demos and additional activities too.

Kirkleatham Museum.

Kirkleatham Museum is located in the Queen Anne building that was built in 1709 as a school for boys. The Museum is a local heritage museum for the borough of Redcar and Cleaveland. The Museum has a range of exhibits covering the industrial, maritime and social history of Kirkleatham.

Superworm/Wellbeing Trail.

In the grounds of Kirkleatham Hall they have a Superworm Trail through the woods. Following clues based of the Superworm Book by Julia Donaldson you learn all about the creepy crawlies in the woods and become a Forest Superhero.

Kirkleatham Playground.

There is a free-to-use (for all visitors) playground on the Kirkleatham Estate just next to the car park.

The playground includes swings, climbing frames and an obstacle course. It is in excellent condition with the equipment made of sturdy wood, there are picnic tables too which is perfect for a picnic on a nice day.

Kirkleatham Walled Garden.

We absolutely love strolling around a garden. I actually prefer visiting gardens without the kids so I can spend more time admiring the plants, flowers and wildlife but I do still like to bring the kids along to these kinds of days out too as gardens are always a nice place for a family walk with plenty to look at.

The Grade II listed Kirkleatham Walled Garden opened its gates to visitors in August 2021 after being closed for more than 30 years. Along with the formal gardens there is also a science garden, areas for activities, a glasshouse, a water ply area, a café and a shop.
