Northern Stage is probably our favourite theatre in Newcastle and we have been regular visitors over the years.
Being surrounded by Newcastle University Campus, Northern Stage is pretty central in Newcastle so has planety of great places to eat within walking distance.
Northern Stage Bar
The Northern Stage Bar is a great starting point for your theatre visit as it is right in the theatre lobby. The evening menu focuses on sharing boards and pizzas. The Pizza are freshley baked with a selection of toppings and the sharing boards have something for everyone.
We shared the Charcuterie Board and a Margherita Pizza. The Sharing Board included three Charcuterie meats with Mediterranean roasted vegetables and artichokes, mixed olives and freshly baked focaccia.
The medditerranean veg was the best bit for me, a little bit of it on some of the foccacia was delicious. The Pizza was really great too, plenty of sauce and a cripsy crust just how we like it.
It is a good idea to reserve a table as the bar can get busy pre-show and it guarantees you have a table. You can see their full menu and book a reservation here.
Chilli Padi
Just a 10 minute walk to Northern Stage on Leazes Park Road is Chilli Padi. A Malaysian Street Food restaurant which is an absolute gem.
The food here tastes really authentic and packs a punch in both flavour and spice. We started by sharing the Salt and Chilli Calamari and if you like heat this is a great starter.
Sam had the Smoked Chicken which was everything she hoped it would be and after having a try I can say it is very moreish.
I had the Beef Rendang, a heady mix of deep flavours and complex spices made this one of the best meals I have had in Newcastle.
We will definitely be back here as there are so many dishes on the menu that we want to try. You can see their full menu here.
Dough Daze
On Ridley Place, just a 7 minute walk from Northern Stage, is Dough Daze. A New York style neighbourhood pizzaria.
You can order by the slice or get a whole pizza, we had the margherita last time but I also recommend the buffalo chicken pizza.
They also have some great sides like amazing dough balls, mac and cheese and garlic bread. You can visit their website here.
Deli Churros
Also on Ridley Place is Deli Churros, specialising in churros of various sizes and topping including sugar, chocolate sause, toffee sauce, ice cream and churro sundaes.
They also have a selection of savoury dishes like Empanadas, Tequenos and Arepa. I haven't tried it yet but the Beef Arepa looks amazing.
What we really love about Deli Churros is the owners. They are lovely couple from Venezuela who moved to Newcastle nearly 20 years ago and brought their passion for Venezuelan food with them.
They are always so friendly and the last time we were there they were dancing together as we came in. You can see their full menu here.
Little Dumpling House

Another resident of Ridley Place is the Little Dumpling House. A cute little place serving authentic steamed dumplings and buns.
These are honestly the best we've ever had! I highly recommend the lamb and carrot ones plus their homemade chilli dipping sauce. They are licensed too if you fancy a pre-show beer.
You can see more on their Facebook page or on Instagram.
Zapatista
More treats from Ridley Place from Zapatista. Zapatista is a great spot for a quick pre-theatre meal. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas with lots of options my personal favourite the Chilli Con Carne burrito.
Vegan and Gluten Free options are also available on the menu and they have some meal deals as well. You can see their full menu here.
El Coto

On Leazes Park Road just a 10 minute walk from Northern Stage is El Coto a Spanish restaurant specialising in tapas. They have a wide range of hot and cold tapas, salads, cured meats and paellas.
I love tapas, being able to mix up a few small plates means I can try lots of dishes. You can see the full El Coto menu here.
ShiJo

Just a 5 minute walk from Northern Stage at the Haymarket Hub is ShiJo. The newest japanese asian street food cafe serving hot and cold dishes including noodle soups, Katsu Curries and Gyoza.
We haven't tried ShiJo yet but some of the dishes look incredible. You can see their full menu here.
Red Mezze

7 minutes from Northern stage Red Mezze (right next to St James' Park) serves various hot and cold mezze including Shawarma, Moussakka and Kofte.
Personally I think they serve some of the best lamb dishes in Newcastle. You can see their full menu here.
